Eddy current measurements of electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability of porous metals

چکیده
This paper presents a method, which simultaneously estimates the electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability of porous metals. Porous Cu and Fe manufactured by the lost carbonate sintering process have been tested. An air-cored solenoid coil was designed for the measurements of rod-shaped samples when inserted coaxially with the coil. It was theoretically found that the phase-frequency response of the normalised eddy current signal of the coil is virtually independent of the radius, electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability of the test samples. For non-magnetic, conductive porous Cu, the electrical conductivity was measured with a calibration curve of the coil relating the impedance change and the electrical conductivity of the sample. For magnetic porous Fe, the imaginary part of the signal at the lowest frequencies can be used to estimate the permeability. The measured conductivity values of the porous Cu are shown in the paper in comparison with that of bulk materials with known conductivity. The measured permeability values of the porous Fe are given and the sample-length effect on the measurements is also discussed. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electrical conductivity measurement of metal plates using broadband eddy-current and four-point methods
Electrical conductivity of metal plates is measured by two distinct methods and the uncertainty associated with each method is evaluated. First, the impedance of an air-cored eddy-current coil is measured in the frequency range 100 Hz to 20 kHz. Corrections are made to account for the fact that the coil is not a pure inductor but exhibits finite resistance and capacitance in and between the win...
متن کاملApplications of Impedance Plane and Magnetic Differential Permeability in Microstructural Characterization of AISI D2 Tool Steel
Two nondestructive electromagnetic/magnetic techniques including hysteresis loop and eddy current methodologies have been used to characterize microstructural changes of AISI D2 cold work tool steel as a result of quench and tempering treatments. To measure the fraction retained austenite in quenched microstructure, six specimens were austenitized in the range of 1000-1130 °C. Samples austenit...

Recently, the use of renewable energies has increased to environmental pollution, limitation of fossil energy resources and energy security One of the means that enable us to use such energies is fuel cells (FC). However, there are many problems in the commercialization of FC from an economically and operation perspective. One of the most important problems is heat management. New heat pipes...

Experimental results are presented to illustrate that there exists a unique window of opportunity for eddy current NDE of residual stress in surface-treated nickel-base superalloys. In light of its frequency-dependent penetration depth, the measurement of eddy current conductivity has been suggested as a possible means to allow the nondestructive evaluation of subsurface residual stresses in su...
متن کاملEddy current determination of the electrical conductivity-temperature relation of Cdl_xZn xTe alloys
A multifrequency eddy current sensor has been installed in a vertical Bridgman furnace and used to measure the electrical conductivity of Cd l_XZn,Te alloys (for x = 0, 0.045 and 0.08) as a function of temperature during heating and cooling through the melting transition. The conductivity of the x = 0.0 and 0.08 samples increased exponentially with temperature up to the melting point. A 4-6 fol...
